A research study by the Law School Admissions Council (LSAC) reveals that thirty years ago, lawyers billed out 1300 hours per year on average. But now it’s not uncommon for the partners and associates in the biggest firms to bill 2500 hours or more per year. Of course, those are just the billable hours – that doesn’t include all of the non-billable hours that are spent chasing money from deadbeat clients, dealing with mounds of paperwork, employee issues, etc.

Now if you’re billing out 2500 hours a year, that would be great if you were making the 60% profit margin that firms used to make 30 years ago. But today, it’s more common for the average firm to be around 45% profitability, according to the LSAC study.

Bottom line? Lawyers work on average 55 hours a week... which means lots of nights and weekends away from their families, friends and the other important things that make life worth living – and they do it for less money.

But then again, I’m probably not telling something you don’t already know.
