Not only are you being squeezed for time and money, the stress level of attorneys is at an all-time high. With the constant commercialization of the legal profession, the dog-eat-dog, negative environment you’re forced to work in every day, the constant demands of judges, clients, and ridiculous court schedules, the lack of civility of other lawyers, and the public’s incessant lawyer-bashing - it’s no wonder that one out of three lawyers suffers from clinical depression, alcoholism or drug abuse. Not to mention that the divorce rate among lawyers is higher than that of other professionals. There are even a few disturbing preliminary studies that show attorneys commit suicide or think about suicide more often than non-attorneys! So do you find yourself wondering…now just why exactly did I sign up for this? Was it for the money? Guess again… This Ain’t Your Dad’s Law Practice – You Work More for Less Money A 2002 research study by the Law School Admissions Council (LSAC) reveals that thirty years ago, lawyers billed out 1300 hours per year on average. But now it’s not uncommon for the partners and associates in the biggest firms to bill 2500 hours or more per year. Of course, those are just the billable hours – that doesn’t include all of the non-billable hours that are spent chasing money from deadbeat clients, dealing with mounds of paperwork, employee issues, etc. Now if you’re billing out 2500 hours a year, that would be great if you were making the 60% profit margin that firms used to make 30 years ago. But today, it’s more common for the average firm to be around 45% profitability, according to the LSAC study. Bottom line? Lawyers work on average 55 hours a week…which means lots of nights and weekends away from their families, friends and the other important things that make life worth living – and they do it for less money. And Just Like You I Was Forced To Choose: A: My Business or B: My Family After starting my own CPA practice in 1983 and working the standard 70 hour weeks for years just to get it off the ground, I had finally achieved my goal of opening several offices in cities all over Colorado. Although the money and the accolades were there, it came at the expense of my family and my health. I finally made the smart decision at that critical time that no amount of success was worth that. Now don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying that I took some ‘vow of poverty’ and got off the money-making bandwagon. In fact, I’ll just come out and say it… “I
like being RICH - and my family likes it too!” But I had to ask myself…what good was it to be rich and still work 70 hour weeks? At the time I was quickly becoming a stranger to my wife and kids. And even though I had tons of cash, I literally didn’t have the time to enjoy it. Plus, at the rate I was going, my health was likely to give out on me and send me to an early grave. Sure, I could have retired early, but what good would it do if I found myself trapped inside the prison of an unhealthy body, kids who thought I was a jerk, and a possible soon-to-be ex-wife who resented me? So
